Dr. LeRoy Upson Gardner, at left, examines preserved lung tissue samples in the Trudeau laboratory on Church Street in Saranac Lake. Gardner, a pathologist, was director of the Saranac Laboratory from 1927 to 1946. His pioneering research linked the development of tuberculosis to silicosis, an occupational hazard for those working in mines and factories.
