Benjamin Brandreth pioneered the use of mass advertising to market his "Vegetable Universal Pills," a cathartic touted as a treatment all manner of ills. By the 1830s he was a household name across the country. In 1852 he purchased 26,000 acres of land in the Adirondacks. Brandreth Park is still a private preserve.
