2024 Nature Walks with Ed Kanze

The Adirondack Guide is the one of the oldest and most storied professions in the region. Guides have long navigated visitors through backwoods trails in hot pursuit of big game, steered boats through raging rapids and meandering streams, and shepherded hikers to the pinnacles of the highest peaks.

At the Adirondack Experience, we are happy to carry on this long-standing tradition with our program, Nature Walks with Ed Kanze. A self-identified “a-little-bit-of-everything-ologist”, Ed is a naturalist, author, and Adirondack Guide. He is a former National Park Ranger, worked at Acadia National Park and Gulf Islands National Seashore, served as Curator of the Trailside Nature Museum in Cross River, New York, taught field ecology for the National Audubon Society, and was senior naturalist at the Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining, New York. Ed has deep roots in the Adirondacks. His great-great-great-great grandparents carved a farm out of the woods along the Sacandaga River, c. 1795.

Nature walks with Ed include identifying local flora, fauna, and animal tracks. You may be lucky enough to catch a wildlife sighting, and Ed is sure to regale the group with a good story or two. This summer you can explore the route of the old Marion River Railroad, take in the magnificent views atop the Buck Mountain Firetower, join us along the Northville-Placid Trail, and explore many more trails throughout the central Adirondacks.
