Christy Mathewson was one of the greatest baseball pitchers of all time. Nicknamed "Big Six," he played for the New York Giants. After exposure to weaponized chemicals while serving in World War I, he contracted tuberculosis and came to Saranac Lake for treatment. He did not recover, and died there in 1925.
