Gabriels Sanatorium opened in 1894, built on land donated by William Seward Webb. Operated by the Sisters of Mercy, it was the first Adirondack sanatorium to admit black patients. Paul Smith's College purchased the facility in 1965; the property was sold on in 1980 to New York State as a minumum security prison, which closed in 2009.
