This chess board was made by a patient at the Gabriels Sanitorium in the 1920s. Using a cauterising tool, the unidentified maker burned in the facade of a building with the names of players inducted into the Rest-a-While Cottage "Hall of Chess Fame" in 1925 and 1926.
Board and card games were popular with tuberculosis patients under doctors' orders to restrict their physical activity.
