Healing in the Adirondacks : Medicine and Medical Practice
Label:
Founded by Francis Livingston Trudeau in 1885, the Trudeau Sanitorium in Saranac Lake treated many tuberculosis patients at less than the cost of treatment. Some doctors, many of them former patients themselves, worked for free or took lower wages. Although fundraising was a constant concern, the "san" was successful, treating thousands of patients, establishing a nursing school, and sponsoring pioneering research in the treatment and cure of contagious diseases.
