Stereoscopes like this one held stereoviews--two photographs taken by one camera with two lenses set at the same distance as between two human eyes. The stereoscope brings the two images together as one to give it a three dimensional look. Very popular with children and adults, stereoviews were sold in sets. Images of landscapes, animals, and exotic locales brought the world into family parlors.
