What could be more welcome after a long Adirondack winter than the appearance of bright yellow daffodils? This postcard view was taken in early spring at Scaroon Manor on Schroon Lake. Billed as "Heaven on Earth," the hotel grounds covered "over 400 acres of Nature in her most inspiring dress [with] beautifully landscaped grounds; pine tree lined walks; velvety turf garlanded with thousands of exotic flowers and shrubs." Produce from two large vegetable gardens supplied the kitchen to feed guests. Scaroon was famous for live entertainment in an outdoor ampitheater (Red Skelton was a regular), also lavishly planted with iris, daylilies, tiger lilies, and shrubs.
The Manor was torn down in the 1960s. One of the large Italianate fountains from the terraced gardens was moved to the Town of Chester by the Adirondack Mountain Garden Club. Shrubs rescued from the hotel site were moved there as well, and are located on Route 9 a few miles from the Northway Exit 26.
