When John Howard Doig (1847-1919) was not at work for the New York Central Railroad, he was likely to be found along an Adirondack stream or pond with pole or paintbrush in hand. According to his obituary, " He was one of the many merry fishing parties that pitched their camps at Bisby's, Nick's Lake and along the Moose River. It was his love of out-door sport and the thrill that the sharp, tremulous pull a speckled trout can give that inspired Mr. Doig into becoming a painter."
