In this extraordinary photo from around 1900, four men pose in a guideboat with four hounds, a buck, and some gear; likely totaling more than 1,000 pounds.

Charles Derby probably took this photo for fun or effect, because the men would not be going anywhere like this; the gunwales are barely above the water--and they have no oars!

This glass-plate negative dates to around 1900. These men are guides of the St. Regis Lakes area, and were probably employed by Paul Smith's Hotel. The two men on the left are brothers Doug and Henry Martin. Their sister Lydia was married to Paul Smith.
