Gilman Selleck built "Lower Camp" near Gulf Brook around 1885. He kept a large garden, selling the strawberries he grew in South Colton and made maple syrup which he used to can wild raspberries. Selleck learned to play the violin as a youngster, and often played for the deer who came to his salt lick.
