Alvah Dunning (1816-1902) was born in Lake Pleasant, escaping to the woods of the central Adirondacks after beating his wife. Dunning became famous as a talented guide. One of his early clients as William H.H. "Adirondack" Murray, and later, President Grover Cleveland.
