Herbert S. Kates (1894-1947) was an illustrator, etcher, painter, and writer, as well as the first medical artist for the US Army. He often visited the Adirondack Mountains, making quick studies in monochrome watercolor. He made this view along Roaring Brook in the Keene Valley area several years before his death.
