In this 1874 painting "Evening on Lake Raquette, Adirondacks," James D. Smillie depicts a party of people socializing in guideboats at twilight. The artist captures the magical moment when the clouds are undershot with colors from the setting sun. West Mountain is an ethereal silhouette in the distance.

The artist was inspired by an 1872 camping trip with friends. The piece was commissioned by Anna Cook, a young woman who was one of the campers. James and Anna married several years later.
