When rowing a boat, rowers must look over their shoulders to see where they are going. On a lake, like in this photo, the rower doesn't have to look very frequently. On a winding river, however, rowers must turn their heads more frequently to avoid running into a riverbank.

Photographer Seneca Ray Stoddard captured this now-famous image of his view from the stern seat of a guideboat sometime around 1880. You can see the photographer's own feet in the foreground, resting on some of his gear. The rower is Charlie Blanchard, a guide from Blue Mountain Lake.
