Many of the islands on Adirondack lakes are privately owned by families who have had camps or summer homes on them for generations. Historically, camp owners commonly used their guideboats to travel between town and island. They hauled gear and supplies, but also enjoyed rowing their guideboats just for the fun of it.

This Seneca Ray Stoddard photo shows a man rowing a guideboat near Thacher Island (named for the Thacher family) on Blue Mountain Lake around 1890. Maybe he's a neighbor coming by for a visit?
