Adirondack Guideboats : Beauty and Utility in Action
Section:
Blending Function with Recreation

Label:
Guideboats are among the fastest fixed-seat rowboats in the world. Guideboat racing is a thrilling sport for some more-experienced rowers. Here, John Seaman and his father Howard race against each other on Long Lake. During a short race, a good rower in a well-designed guideboat can reach speeds of 8 miles-per-hour.

Howard Seaman was a Long Lake resident who championed guideboat racing. He won many grueling guideboat races including the 44-miler, which is a race from Long Lake to Tupper Lake and which includes a 1.5-mile carry around Raquette Falls.
