The Marshall family summered at Knollwood on Lower Saranac Lake through the 1930s. In this photo, taken between 1914 and 1920, a young George Marshall (in the stern seat) peeks out from behind his sister Ruth. It is very likely that their brother Robert took this photograph. They're in a guideboat on Lower Saranac Lake.

George and Robert were passionate about exploring the Adirondack region. With their guide Herb Clark, the Marshall brothers climbed all 46 Adirondack mountains taller than 4,000 feet, making them founding members of the "46ers".
