Wilderness to Warfront : The Adirondacks and World War II
Label:
This bottle contains a sample of the first run of titanium ore processed July 11, 1943, at Tahawus. The iron mines at Tahawus, near Newcomb, opened that year by National Lead Company--not for iron, but for titanium dioxide. Once considered an impurity in Adirondack iron ore, titanium is an important ingredient in paint, paper, aircraft engines, and artillery. Adirondack titanium was used in marine paint, protecting US Navy vessels from rust.
