National Lead's operations at Tahawus ran 24 hours a day, seven days a week, producing 600 long tons of concentrated titanium and 1200 long tons of iron each day. Over the objections of local conservation groups, the federal government eased environmental protections to allow construction of a 30 mile railroad track to move the ore out of the mountains.
This photo shows the North Creek-Sanford Lake connection, looking toward the titanium loading yard.
