Adirondack Hermits : Experts in Social Distancing
Label:
Although his time as an Adirondack hermit was short, artist John Henry Hill (1839-1922) became a reluctant celebrity at his cabin on Phantom Island in Lake George. Seneca Ray Stoddard suggested in his guidebooks that tourists include the island in their sightseeing plans. This prompted the artist to engage in angry shouting matches with passersby. Eventually, Hill was removed from the island and taken to an asylum in 1876. He made this etching of "Upper Cascades of Shelving Rock" in 1871, one year after he arrived in Lake George.
