Adirondack Hermits : Experts in Social Distancing
Label:
Archie "Bobcat" Ranney (1871-1955) was a linotype operator in Binghamton, NY. In 1934, when he was about 62, he left his wife and son to live alone near Tombstone Swamp in North Creek. In spite of his age, he survived harsh winters and a bout of rheumatism, playing the banjo and writing verse for his own amusement. In 1952, aged 80, his Adirondack adventure came to an end when he nearly froze to death. He was treated for exposure and a heart condition at a hospital near Binghamton, and reunited with his family. Ranney died in 1955.
