Noah John Rondeau (1883-1967) is perhaps the most famous Adirondack hermit. Born in Ausable Forks into a large family, he ran away from home as a teenager, and worked as a caretaker and guide in Coreys. In 1929, aged 46, he walked six hours into the Cold River wilderness to live apart from society. He declared himself mayor of Cold River, population, one.
