Adirondack Gardens : Cultivating the North Country
Label:
Beecher Gilbert Harvey (1923-2015) grew up farming in the Adirondacks. He described his farm in Warrensburg in the mid-1980s: "For the last twenty years I've [been] on this one farm. [When] I started out here, the land was run out. Manuring it and working on it, we got to where it cut better than six hundred bales of hay this year, plus we raise our gardens and it's a relaxing place. My father before me, he was a farmer, and he always told me in order to take out of the land you have to put back into it."

In this portrait by Matthias Oppersdorf, Harvey holds a head of lettuce grown and harvested on his land.
