Rowing in a guideboat was a popular activity for courting and married couples. This photo from around 1910 shows a well-dressed North River couple in a guideboat on a river--probably the Hudson, which flows through that town.

According to the donor, the couple in the photo is her grandparents. They were very proud to own a guideboat. The valise between them on the cockpit floor likely carries picnic supplies. They often reminisced of rowing on the Hudson and picnicking at a scenic spot on the banks along the river.
