Transparent Views : The Adirondacks in Watercolor
Label:
This view of Gill Brook is one of 15 grisaille (meaning: painted in shades of grey) watercolor landscapes by Alexander Lawrie (1828-1917) in the mountains around Elizabethtown. In the years following the American Civil War, Lawrie spent summers in the Adirondacks painting landscapes with friend and fellow artist William Trost Richards and others including Asher B. Durand, Thomas Cole, and John F. Kensett.

Lawrie became acquainted with the Hand family of Elizabethtown, who acquired the watercolors shortly after Lawrie painted them. They remained in the family's home until the museum acquired them in 2015.
