Transparent Views : The Adirondacks in Watercolor
Label:
Landscape painter and engraver John Henry Hill (1839-1922) first visited the Adirondacks in the 1860s. From 1870 to 1874, he lived year-round in the house he built on Phantom Island on Lake George, where he became a reluctant tourist attraction. Photographer and guidebook writer Seneca Ray Stoddard branded Hill the "hermit of Lake George," encouraging readers to visit his island home where "he is ostensibly engaged in making studies of Lake George scenery and foliage."
