James David Smillie (1833-1909) was trained as a banknnote engraver, but noted in his diary that "it is an intolerable bore for me to do such work." He turned to painting full time, sharing a studio with his younger brother George, also an artist, in New York City.
Smillie worked in watercolor and oil, as well as drypoint, mezzotint, and roulette. He was a founding member of the American Watercolor Society and the New York Etching Club. He painted this view of the Ausable River on August 18, 1869.
